How to get the most out of your masque

Using a hair masque is one of the best things you can do to improve your hair health and while it might seem as simple as applying and washing off, there are a few tips you can utilize to get the most out of your masque. We already spend so much money on the right masque, why not make the most of it?

Get the best masque for your hair type

With so many different masques on the market, you might feel overwhelmed and choose one that is not quite right for your hair. Read our post here to find out which one you should be using and the benefits of each!

Apply it correctly

Instead of just using your hands to apply the product to dry hair and rinsing off after a few minutes, apply the masque to damp hair with a fine-tooth comb. When our hair is wet, the strands become more porous which allows for better absorption of the product. Make sure that your hair is clean of all oils and grease before spritzing your hair with water. While your hair should not be soaking wet, it could be wet enough that your strands have a slight drip.

Smooth the masque over your hair and use a fine-tooth comb like the Balmain Golden Styling Comb to ensure that the product is evenly distributed. The wide teeth on this luxurious comb are ideal for detangling wet hair without pulling at the strands or breaking the hair.

Leave it on for as long as possible

While many of the instructions might recommend leaving your masque on for about 30 minutes or less, there is no reason why you can't leave it on longer, especially if your masque is from a luxury brand that you trust. Because you will be applying it to damp hair and leaving it on for as long as you can, your hair will absorb all the ingredients and have a noticeable difference in shine and strength. You could even apply the masque before bed and sleep in it!

Cover your head

If you don't have the time to leave your masque on for a few hours, then cover your head with a warm cotton wrap after application. This will ensure that your stands are even more porous and that the benefits of the masque are absorbed faster and more efficiently. Try not to use a hair towel to do this as towels can cause friction with the hair and damage your strands.

Treat yourself to a head massage

When applying your masque, take a few extra minutes to give yourself a deep head massage. Using your fingers to stimulate your scalp with the masque will help your follicles push out new hair and increase blood flow and circulation in your scalp. Plus, if you plan on treating yourself and leaving the masque on for the whole day, then this is the perfect way to start your day of pampering!

Wash it out correctly

While washing your masque out with cool water might may it feel like all the product is out, you need to be using a shampoo and conditioner to ensure that no residual product is left behind. If you don't wash out your masque correctly, especially if you are leaving it in for longer than intended, then you might find that your hair will be greasy, oily and have a lot more buildup than usual.

Mind your hair type

If you have fine or oily hair then take care to not apply your masque more than once a week. This can cause excess grease and oil buildup, leaving your hair flat and weighted. If your hair is very dry and damaged, then you could apply your masque at least twice a week. The best way to find out what would work for you would be to see what your hair looks and feels like a day after you masque. If your hair seems too greasy, then spread out the time between the application. If it seems healthier and shinier, then applying it again a week or so later would be your best bet.
