DIY tips on how to care for your hair in Winter
Along with the chilly weather, crisp mornings and endless hot chocolates, winter is also a time where your hair and skin suffer the most. The dry, cold air from outside and the heaters on the inside all causes hair to get brittle, dry and in need of some extra love and care. Since winter in South Africa is during the national lock-down, we know that you can’t go to the hair salon to get a deep, intensive treatment, so here are a few DIY hair treatments that can be done in the comfort of your home during the chilly season.
Consider other factors
It’s important to remember that it is not only the heat from the air conditioning and the cold from outside that affects the hair in winter but also a few other factors such as hats, scarves, and showering with piping hot water. While these factors do help to keep us warm and comfortable, it also causes damage to the hair and leaves the hair frizzy, static, and brittle.
Instead of showering in piping hot water, try to keep the water temperature to cool-warm when washing and rinsing your hair. If you need it to be a lot warmer, then keep your hair and scalp out of the hot water if possible and only wash and rinse the hair with cool water.
Because your hair needs extra nourishment during the winter months, we recommend incorporating a few DIY treatments to help keep your hair soft and moisturized. See a list below of our top 3 hair masques that you can do in the comfort of your home.
For luscious and shiny hair
For hair that appears thick, healthy, and super glossy, try this easy DIY treatment before washing your hair.
In a bowl, add:
- ½ tablespoon honey
- 2 tablespoon plain yogurt
- 1 tablespoon coconut or avocado oil (avocado oil is lighter and will be fine for type 1 - 2 hair whereas coconut oil is a lot richer and will work for type 3 - 4 hair).
- 1 teaspoon castor oil (for shine and thickness)
Mix everything together and comb it through your hair. Leave it on for about 30 minutes and rinse out with luke-warm water before shampooing well.
If your hair is dry, brittle, and fragile, then this is the perfect treatment for you.
In a small saucepan, slowly heat together:
- ½ cup of honey
- ½ cup of coconut milk
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
Let this mixture heat up gently until it is warm to the touch. Remove from the heat and massage it into damp hair before covering your hair with a shower cap or heated towel.
We recommend using a heated towel since the heat from the masque and towel will help to open the hair shaft, allowing the moisturizing properties to penetrate deeply into the hair.
Leave this on for 30 minutes before rinsing. For best results, try doing this treatment once a week until you see and feel the benefits.
Brittle hair banisher
While coconut may be rich, it is an essential ingredient in many hair masques since it nourishes the hair well. If you have brittle hair, then this super ingredient will come in handy once again for this brittle hair banisher.
In a bowl, mix together:
- 1 cup of coconut milk
- 2 tablespoons of chickpea flour
Mix it well, getting rid of any lumps. Rub the mixture into your hair and scalp. Leave this mixture on for 10 minutes before rinsing well.
