Parabens and the dangers they cause to your hair

Commonly found in beauty products, parabens are a harmful chemical that is used to prevent bacteria while preserving the shelf-life of products such as make-up, lotions and hair-care products. At GlamIt, we have taken immense care to ensure that all of our products are paraben-free due to the side effects that parabens can cause. Read more below to learn about why you should consider going paraben-free

With the ability to pass through skin, parabens have often been linked to increasing one's risk for cancers and due to this and many other concerns, most people are starting to make the switch to using paraben and sulphate free products in their everyday routine. Using any hair care product that contains parabens can be quite harmful as since they can pass through the scalp, they can leave you experiencing symptoms such as a dry, irritated scalp as well as colour fade and hair loss.

How do you know if you're using parabens?

Not sure if your products contain parabens? The most common names for parabens listed in the ingredient list of products are methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, and butylparaben. However, some products hide this by calling it Alkyl parahydroxy benzoates.

Make the switch

Want to make the switch but not sure where to begin? Start small by switching out your shampoo for one that is hydrating and nourishing. We love the BioSilk Silk Therapy Range as it can be used on any hair type. The Silk Therapy 17 Leave-In Miracle Conditioner is a brilliant product to use to help combat any dryness or breakage that you may already have. It works to:

  • Conditions and hydrates hair instantly

  • Provides volume and body

  • Controls and defines curls

  • Reconstructs and repairs dry and damaged hair

  • Strengthens the hair

  • Revives dull lifeless hair

  • Smoothes the cuticle

  • Controls frizz and flyaway’s

  • Prevents split ends

  • Stops hair breakage

  • Seals hair cuticle

  • Protects hair color from fading

  • Protects hair from environmental damage

  • Thermal protector for blow drying

  • Thermal protection from flat and curling irons

  • Leaves hair soft and silky

  • Adds incredible shine

Care for your colour

Colour treated hair? Then it is doubly important that you stay away from parabens. We help reverse and stop the signs of colour-damage and fade, we recommend the CHI Rose Hip Oil Shampoo and Conditioner as they work together to preserve colour-tone and intensity without being harsh on your hair. Unlike paraben containing products, this duo helps to keep your colour fresh while injecting much-needed moisture and nourishment to the hair.

Watch the date

If you have made the switch to paraben-free products, then be sure to take note of the expiry date of your products. Because they don't contain any parabens, they are more likely to go off sooner and get toxic. Once you reach the expiry date, toss your product and recycle the packaging!
