For years now, the importance of coconut oil for your hair, skin and general well-being have been talked about by just about everyone. While we know how this magical oil detoxes the body and makes for an incredible makeup remover, we decided to look at the many ways in which you can use it for your hair.
When applied to the hair, coconut oil can help to moisturize ,condition, stimulate growth, detangle and decrease dandruff. Before getting started with coconut oil, it is important to make sure that you buy one from a wellness store that is unrefined, organic and pure. This will to ensure that there are no additives or preservatives in the oil and that you will be getting the full benefits without any additions. Comprised mainly of smaller medium-chain fatty acids, coconut oil is believed to penetrate the hair more deeply and faster than other conditioners. Unlike chemical conditioners, there is no harm at leaving this product on for an entire day (or night) as the longer it stays on your hair, the more healthy, silky soft and smooth your tresses are. However, if you do have extremely brittle hair, then applying coconut oil should be avoided and it could lead to even more brittleness. In this instance, you may want to opt for a product that contains argan oil instead. It it also important to remember that if you have an allergy to coconuts, then this is definitely not the treatment for you.
Use it to deep condition dry and damaged hair by melting some of the oil (or you can let it melt in your hands) and massaging it into your hair and scalp, focussing on the lengths and ends. You can apply a warm towel to your head and leaving it on for a while before rinsing the oil out with a mild shampoo. Try not to add any additional heat to your hair but if you simply have to reach for the hairdryer, then allow your hair to air dry for as long as possible before finishing it off on the lowest setting available on your dryer.
If you find that you often suffer with an itchy or dry scalp, then an at-home coconut oil hair mask will help add moisture and much needed hydration into your scalp. By using a massaging technique when applying the oil, you increase blood flow to your head which helps to rejuvenate the scalp and keep dryness at bay. What's more, this is also a wonderful at-home treatment you can do to increase hair growth! If your hair is more frizzy than most, then using a very little bit of the coconut oil on your hairbrush is an excellent way of detangling your hair and adding incredible shine. Be careful not to add too much oil as you might end up with greasy roots.
